The Dangers of Gambling

Gambling involves betting something of value on a future event with an uncertain outcome. It can include sports betting, online poker, scratch tickets, DIY investing and even fantasy leagues – but it always involves risk and a potential for winning more than you invested. It appeals to a desire for more and is inherently addictive. This is a clear breach of the 1st, 2nd and 10th commandments, and enthrones personal desires in place of God (Colossians 3:1-5).

It can be very dangerous, especially for those who don’t have strong support systems. For those who struggle with gambling, there are steps they can take to reduce temptation. Some ways to do this include cutting up credit cards, putting a spouse or parent in charge of money, closing online gambling accounts, and limiting their exposure to gaming environments. Using a peer support group like Gamblers Anonymous can also help.

There are many good reasons to avoid gambling, but it’s important to recognize the positive aspects as well. Casinos, for example, can be a social space in a world that often feels isolating. It’s not uncommon for players to celebrate each other’s wins, share tips and look out for one another. Plus, the nonstop inner monologue that can plague a compulsive gambler is put on hold for a little while as they focus on their game and hope for a lucky strike. This can be a welcome break from the stress of day-to-day life.
